The ‘Blackbird’ is all about artisan, small batch winemaking. Hand plunged in one tonne open vats with minimal intervention and basket pressed to oak. This ensures that all of the primary fruit flavour from the vineyard is captured and drives what you taste in the mouth is a wonderfully full flavoured and balanced medium weight bright ruby red wine showing elegant, velvety tannins in the mouth with hints of dry and dusty earth. There is a deceptive succulence to this wine, with a mouth coating structure and lingering persistence on the palate; notes almost of strawberry cream element to the fruit profile and licks of fresh Italian leather.
The aromatics are lifted and appealing; fresh cranberries with green olives and lots of those pretty Sangiovese light berry fruits best served with roast pork with fresh fennel salad.
A little bird also told me (excuse the pun!) but the story behind the name Blackbird comes from the song Carissa Major (Claymore’s General Manager) used to sing to her babies to get them to sleep.
Full Fat Red is a full flavoured blend of no less than 6 grapes, hence Full Fat!…the port grape Touriga Naçional, Shiraz, Montepulciano, Nebbiolo, Barbera and Monastrell. Its great texture is heightened from maturing the grapes “sur lie” in French Oak Hogshead barrels for 17 months before bottling. A pungent, intricate nose of blueberry, dark cherry, earth and spice layered with lifted berry fruit, there are some cedar tannins, with a spicy, refreshing finish. Seriously good and fun wine.
Enjoy with a BBQ, or any full flavoured, grilled meat.
An oaked primitivo It is a single varietal Primitivo, from a small vineyard parcel in the heart of the superior Manduria DOC in the heel of Italy. This is a fine example of primitivo: full-bodied, jammy with tones of chocolate and raisins. Really meant to be drunk young, those that love fruity wines will not be disappointed.
The 2016 Kaleidoscope Horizons is the more boisterous of the Samuel’s Gorge reserve blends. The wine is structurally supported by a tessellation of Tempranillo tannins, allowing Grenache to sing, Graciano to provide aromatics and acidity.
This beguiling blend will lead you down a path of smouldering cherry wood, marshy bogs, cured pancetta and cacao nibs. The wine grants the avid and willing taster a spice matrix accompanied by dark lifted aromatics of poached satsuma plum and polished mulga wood. Like clouds rumbling over the ocean, the elements of this wine gather and are then refracted like an ever-changing kaleidoscope, finishing with poise and structure.
The wine transcends one to Ho Chin Minh city night market; an intoxicating atmosphere, that like the wine, is wildly enticing. Crispy peking duck pancake with a dash of hoisin sauce.
Aged in large oak casks, this fresh Ripasso makes good use of minimal wood intervention that comes forth as light spice and cinnamon. The core of this wine, however, consists of pulsing black fruit and mature cherry.
