Samuel’s Gorge Graciano 2019
£25.75Graciano is prized for its acidity, structure and intense aromatics. Our vines yield few bunches, but the fruit is exquisite. It is as at home here in McLaren Vale as it is in its native soils of Rioja; thriving in our arid landscape.
Generous dry spice notes of pimento, fresh bay leaves and dusty cocoa are perfectly balanced with pretty aromas of violets, mulberries and Turkish dried figs. Well-integrated tannins create a stage for the red plum and ripe cherry flavours to dance across the palate. In this complex and layered wine, vibrant fruit and fragrant spice find excellent balance.
Savour this with a meal that incorporates elements of both sweet and savoury, such as a Middle Eastern spiced lamb, on hummus, bejewelled with deep pink pomegranate seeds.

“Indigo-purple colour in the glass. Lovely lifted violets and mocha with
oak-spice and red licorice. It’s slinky and finely-structured, albeit with
regional richness. Dark cherries and skin-spice. Classy and long.” -

Bondar, Rayner Vineyard Grenache 2016
£26.75Sourced from Bondar’s tiny 0.7ha block of 48-year old Grenache vines, planted in sand on the Rayner Vineyard in McLaren Vale. The lowest-yielding vines were hand-picked, and natural fermentation took place – some in a ceramic egg on skins for 120 days, some with whole bunches and some with whole berries. All done to add layers of complexity to the wine, and to build structure around the beautifully aromatic and pure Grenache fruit.
The 2016 weaves together precisely these delicious characters, a core of textured, concentrated fruit and a spine of powdery tannins that energize the palate from start to finish.
This wine brings together Grenache (80%), Shiraz (15%) and Mataro (5%). Picked by hand, gently handled in the winery and aged in old French oak.
The wine is bright and lifted with the aromatics of raspberries with fresh herbal notes. Complexity comes through with spice and gaminess from the Mataro, the Shiraz bringing structure and plush fruit to the palate.
This is savoury, with fine tannins and still manages to leave an imprint.

Situated in the beautiful Clare Valley in South Australia, Claymore Wines is now in its third decade. Claymore’s founder and owner, Anura Nitchingham has three great loves in his life – wine, music and football – and he celebrates all of them through the winery.
Many of Claymore’s wines are named after some of the world’s legendary rock songs, albums and artists. The sensory connection for Anura was genuine. To him, the labels are those that resonate beyond their time, across generations and have become something of modern classics; he holds similar aspirations for his wines. To silence any critics who may see the rock icons as a gimmick, Claymore Wines has grown into a serious boutique wine business.
There’s plenty of research that suggests music makes wine taste better so we suggest cranking up the volume and exploring the Music Lovers Mixed Case.

Samuel’s Gorge Mixed Case (6 bottles)
£148.00Samuel’s Gorge hand crafted wines are distinctly Australian with reference to the old world for texture, complexity and harmony. Having great patience, the fermentations of each parcel of fruit are long and slow in open slate fermenters lined with beeswax which date back 100 years. The grapes are pressed off using traditional basket press methods with the wines being transferred to oak to mature. These many components are then blended together to achieve harmony within each of the Samuel’s Gorge wines.
Specialising in four key varietals Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvedre and Tempranillo, grapes are strategically sourced from a range of sites and soils in order to achieve great depth and complexity of flavour.
The 6 bottle case price of £148 includes a 5% discount on the RRP case price of £155.90. The selection is as follows:
x2 Samuel’s Gorge Grenache RRP £25.50
x1 Samuel’s Gorge Mourvedre RRP £24.50

Samuel’s Gorge Mourvedre 2015
£25.50Its full bodied, and the palate has real weight and intensity. It fills the mouth first with dark raspberries, then dark plums, then spices, hints of spicy pepper, leather, chocolate, and much more. This Mourvedre is dominant early, but will settle into the wine with time, which is perfect for what this dense wine needs. Its closed and tight with real structure, some firm but ripe tannins, for a very long and firm finish.

Fox Creek, Jim’s Script, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, 2013
£17.95Jim Watts, an eminent professor of surgery, purchased the bare land that is now Fox Creek vineyards with his wife Helen in 1984. A lover of wine, Jim and his four children planted a selection of grape varieties and made their first wine under the Fox Creek label ten years later.
Three decades following Jim and Helen’s vision to plant grapes certainly stopped the critics who mooted the land was not suitable. It is deserving that Jim has a wine named after him. The Jim’s Script is a classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is full of black fruit flavours and long elegant tannins. This wine has a vibrant and rich palate with seamless integration between the varietal flavours and tannins, finishing with crunchy acidity and an earthy texture.

Cantina Tombacco Aglianico del Beneventano, 2019
£10.95Scarcely known outside southern Italy , but Aglianico is one of Italy's noble grapes which ranks alongside Barolo in quality and why it is often referred to as the Barolo of the south.
A dark, deep ruby red with clear purple tones. This structured wine is complex with enjoyable hints of cherry and red berry notes, followed by a marked vanilla and spicy note. Elegant, warm and full-bodied, this wine has a good length and persistence that leaves an enjoyable soft sensation on the palate.

Fox Creek, ‘Postmaster’, Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvedre 2015
£17.45Background and Winemaking
First produced in 2013 Postmaster GSM is a luscious, elegant, mid-weight wine that displays great flavour and balance, with a medium bodied nature that complements our food, lifestyle and climate. Grenache thrives in McLaren Vale’s warm maritime climate and diverse soil structure where it develops rich, balanced fruit flavour. Traditionally grown for producing fortified wines, the old vineyards contribute flavours and complexity that cannot be matched by younger vines.
Combined with the rich, ripe Shiraz and earthy, textural Mourvèdre, the combination of flavours and tannins deliver exotic gamey notes along with elegance, structure and longevity to the final blend. The 70-year-old Shiraz batch is matured in 2, 3 and 4-year-old French and American oak, barrels were selected for their spice, character and sweet tannin profiles. The 60 and 80-year-old Grenache is matured in older French and American puncheons and selected for the perfumed lift and tannin elegance and power. The Mourvèdre spends time in new, 1 and 2-year-old French and American oak puncheons and was selected for its earthy texture and ability to tie the blend together.

Five Geese, ‘La Volpe’, Nero d’Avola, 2014
£17.45£11.95Sue Trott's geese have been known to fluctuate in numbers becoming victim to marauding foxes. I am not sure the geese will be too happy to discover that Sue has named her latest wine 'La Volpe' (meaning fox)!
Italian varieties do well on Australia and this wine is no exception under the safe hands of Sue Trott.
The colour is brilliant cherry and the nose has a savoury bouquet, perfumed with cherry, quince paste, and very subtle smoky oak complexity.
The palate is elegant, medium bodied, with a good line of acidity and a clean finish. Lingering ripe cherry flavour balanced by distinct but gentle tannins.
10 months in French oak barrels | Portion whole bunch fermentationWith its bold fruit flavours, present tannin and natural acidity, Nero d’Avola is a great wine to match with rich meats. Some classic pairings include a good ol' beef stew, but you could easily swap this for a juicy burger. The gamier the meat the better because it will simply make your wine taste more fruity. There is a natural spiciness to the wine so do not dismiss spicier food. This would be heaven with crispy duck and plum sauce. Vegetarians need not miss out, puy lentils can hold their weight with Nero d'Avola.

Five Geese Shiraz 2007
£15.95A delicious medium-bodied wine which shows fully ripe (though not jammy or dead) fruit can be achieved in McLaren Vale; the red fruit flavours fill the mouth, vanillin oak entirely in tune with the fruit.
Due to the age of this wine, there may be sediment in the bottle. Sediment is a naturally occurring product in wine, during both fermentation and aging, and is completely harmless to you. You can read more about why some wines have sediment here.
