Samuel’s Gorge Grenache, 2014£24.50
Justin McNamee of historic Samuel’s Gorge cements the sense of place in all of his wines. His old gnarly bush vine grenache grapes are from sub-region Blewitt Springs and this wine is an Olympian in full glory: layer upon layer of every red fruit studded with cardamon, clove and cinnamon, reminiscent of the spice markets of British India.
Tasting note by winemaker Justin McNamee, “The flavours are strongly linked to the aromas: vibrant, bright red cherry, zesty twist of a tangelo rind and piquant quince paste shaded with dried oregano and wisps of white pepper. It embraces the rusticity of ancient earth and a signature McLaren Vale flint: subtle hints of the sea in delicate ribbons of nori, the savoury umami of white miso. Bright acids and texturally intriguing fine, chalky tannins give amazing line and length.”
Samuel’s Gorge Mourvedre, 2014£24.50
It is understood that Mourvèdre originates from the coastal city of Mataro in Catalonia. It’s appropriate then that Mourvèdre shines in warm and windswept McLaren Vale’s whose climate is reminiscent of the Iberian peninsula. The vineyard for this variety sits in an idyllic position; a North facing slope near Sellicks Hill where the consistent maritime breezes of St. Vincent’s Gulf cool and ventilate the bunches.
Mourvedre, more often regarded as nothing more than a blending component in a wine, should not and will not be overlooked once you try Samuel’s Gorge Mourvedre. It confidently can stand its ground on its own.
Winemaker Justin McNamee recommends that you find a substantial balloon glass for this one; it has so much depth it warrants good crystal and a solid swirl to loosen the extraordinary detail. The aromatics thunder with Liquorice Allsorts, star anise, a red delicious toffee apple. Spice, finesse and natural rusticity are apt descriptors for this wine.
Samuel’s Gorge Shiraz, 2013£24.50
Samuel’s Gorge have turned their hands at more Shiraz than any other single grape variety. It is a variety that reins over their province McLaren Vale and for that matter, most regions in South Australia. Its magnitude in accessibility ought not to be confused with magnitude of fruit flavour. It has charmed the world because it delivers concentration but concentration on a multitude of levels.
It is argued that Shiraz from Mclaren Vale shows a distinct regional style. Winemaker Justin McNamee goes further, he argues his shiraz has a signature style distinct from other producers. Justin instead celebrates the diversity that even a small region like McLaren Vale can produce.
Justin’s tasting note:
“The nose has a potent lift of liquorice and blackberry fruits. We embrace the mulberries that continue to be a signature of our own estate block and then we build from there. In order to balance the natural sweetness of these berry fruits the wine weaves in savoury of black olives and baccalà with ancient sticky balsamic. Our rustic house style always comfortably returning to a savoury spectrum. The ‘13 shows some engaging twists and turns; the swirl of smoke from a campfire in winter; the smouldering red gum and the dark smells of black coal.”

Samuel’s Gorge, ‘Mosaic of Dreams’, 2013£45.95
The nose delivers wafts of rich, simmering ragout, sun-dried tomatoes and drying bundles of sage. Then red fruits prevail – cranberries and strawberries followed by compote of kumquat, raw cacao, sweet spice and old school burnt, brittle toffee. The flavours allude to sweet French jambon and preserved plum pudding. With fine-boned tannins, this wine glides hand-in-hand all the way from the nose to the elegant finish.
Samuel’s Gorge, Tempranillo 2015£24.50
From a special little vineyard block perched atop of Samuel’s Gorge Seaview Estate; a merry dance of cherry, feminine floral’s and a charming tannin line.
Winemaker Justin has a merry dance with Tempranillo through each vintage, what he calls a Jekyll and Hyde. The vineyard is set amongst the clutches of a rocky, windswept ridge exposed to the Gulf and it’s fair to say that this Iberian hero is an interpretation of its landscape.

“Aromas of jamon Serrano, lavender, dried sage, sun worn dusty limestone walls infiltrate the senses. Be prepared for an extended journey in the cellar with this one; it’s a stayer and may take a while to settle into its stride.”
