O’Leary Walker Adelaide Hills Chardonnay 2013£16.75
The estate grown Chardonnay comes from the O’Leary family property at Oakbank, in the heart of the Adelaide Hills. The bouquet features delicate white peach, nectarine and grapefruit characters which flow seamlessly onto the palate.
Various techniques including barrel fermentation, lees stirring and partial malo-lactic fermentation adds texture and complexity to this alluring cool climate wine.
Samuel’s Gorge Shiraz, 2017£25.50
Samuel’s Gorge have turned their hands at more Shiraz than any other single grape variety. It is a variety that reins over their province McLaren Vale and for that matter, most regions in South Australia. Its magnitude in accessibility ought not to be confused with magnitude of fruit flavour. It has charmed the world because it delivers concentration but concentration on a multitude of levels.
It is argued that Shiraz from Mclaren Vale shows a distinct regional style. Winemaker Justin McNamee goes further, he argues his shiraz has a signature style distinct from other producers. Justin instead celebrates the diversity that even a small region like McLaren Vale can produce.
Justin’s tasting note:
“The nose has a potent lift of liquorice and blackberry fruits. We embrace the mulberries that continue to be a signature of our own estate block and then we build from there. In order to balance the natural sweetness of these berry fruits the wine weaves in savoury of black olives and baccalà with ancient sticky balsamic. Our rustic house style always comfortably returning to a savoury spectrum. The ‘13 shows some engaging twists and turns; the swirl of smoke from a campfire in winter; the smouldering red gum and the dark smells of black coal.”
Samuel’s Gorge Grenache, 2014£25.50
Justin McNamee of historic Samuel's Gorge cements the sense of place in all of his wines. His old gnarly bush vine grenache grapes are from sub-region Blewitt Springs and this wine is an Olympian in full glory: layer upon layer of every red fruit studded with cardamon, clove and cinnamon, reminiscent of the spice markets of British India.
The 2017 Samuel’s Gorge Grenache is elegant, opening with peppery blood orange and cinnamon. Hints of amaro, field strawberries and undergrowth abound before light, delicate tannins flood the mouth with cherry, faint liquorice and soft red fruits, leaving a fresh acid zing and persistent spice-laden finish.
The wine is bright, inviting you out into a summer’s day of adventure embracing the unknown with beloved friends. The possibilities are endless!
Samuel’s Gorge, ‘Mosaic of Dreams’, 2016£49.95
The Mosaic of Dreams is an endeavour to make a wine of ultimate finesse inspired by the exotic landscape of southern Rhone. This wine showcases a beautiful composition of Grenache, Mourvèdre & Syrah, focusing on the visceral rather than the literal elements. Brash blues, the ancient ochre coloured earth, the rose-tinted gulf as the sun sets… the Vale’s own Mosaic of Dreams: a place where the GSM grapes shine.
The wine opens with dark briary fruit, grated nutmeg and the spice of smoked cola with wild notes of ancient tonic. Tamarind paste and dried tangerine peel combine with star anise and roasted pine nuts to fill out the palate. The fine-boned tannins complete the profile. This is a harmonious wine, it dances effortlessly and has a persistent lingering finish.
Samuel’s Gorge, Tempranillo 2016£27.95
From a special little vineyard block perched atop of Samuel’s Gorge Seaview Estate; a merry dance of cherry, feminine floral’s and a charming tannin line.
Winemaker Justin has a merry dance with Tempranillo through each vintage, what he calls a Jekyll and Hyde. The vineyard is set amongst the clutches of a rocky, windswept ridge exposed to the Gulf and it’s fair to say that this Iberian hero is an interpretation of its landscape.

Fox Creek, ‘Arctic Fox’ NV£16.95
Fox Creek’s Arctic Fox is perfect for those seeking an alternative to Champagne.
A blend of three white varieties reflect all that is desirable from McLaren Vale’s climate and soils. Comprising of 55% Vermentino, 23% Verdelho, 22% Sauvignon Blanc.
The Vermentino’s crisp, structural and vibrant contribution is filled out by the Verdelho’s rich, tropical mid palate and yeasty lees stirred characteristics, while the Sauvignon Blanc twist gives the aromatics a lift and provides a herbaceous edge.
So how does it taste: A crisp and refreshing mix of lemon, lime, grapefruit and white nectarine flavours leading into a soft and fleshy mid palate of honeydew, green apple and lemon sorbet. The focused acidity combined with the voluminous mouth-feel finish the wine with crispness, persistence and length.

Fox Creek, ‘Postmaster’, Grenache, Shiraz, Mouvedre 2015£17.45
Background and Winemaking
First produced in 2013 Postmaster GSM is a luscious, elegant, mid-weight wine that displays great flavour and balance, with a medium bodied nature that complements our food, lifestyle and climate. Grenache thrives in McLaren Vale’s warm maritime climate and diverse soil structure where it develops rich, balanced fruit flavour. Traditionally grown for producing fortified wines, the old vineyards contribute flavours and complexity that cannot be matched by younger vines.
Combined with the rich, ripe Shiraz and earthy, textural Mourvèdre, the combination of flavours and tannins deliver exotic gamey notes along with elegance, structure and longevity to the final blend. The 70-year-old Shiraz batch is matured in 2, 3 and 4-year-old French and American oak, barrels were selected for their spice, character and sweet tannin profiles. The 60 and 80-year-old Grenache is matured in older French and American puncheons and selected for the perfumed lift and tannin elegance and power. The Mourvèdre spends time in new, 1 and 2-year-old French and American oak puncheons and was selected for its earthy texture and ability to tie the blend together.

Five Geese, ‘La Volpe’, Nero d’Avola, 2014
Sue Trott's geese have been known to fluctuate in numbers becoming victim to marauding foxes. I am not sure the geese will be too happy to discover that Sue has named her latest wine 'La Volpe' (meaning fox)!
Italian varieties do well on Australia and this wine is no exception under the safe hands of Sue Trott.
The colour is brilliant cherry and the nose has a savoury bouquet, perfumed with cherry, quince paste, and very subtle smoky oak complexity.
The palate is elegant, medium bodied, with a good line of acidity and a clean finish. Lingering ripe cherry flavour balanced by distinct but gentle tannins.

With its bold fruit flavours, present tannin and natural acidity, Nero d’Avola is a great wine to match with rich meats. Some classic pairings include a good ol' beef stew, but you could easily swap this for a juicy burger. The gamier the meat the better because it will simply make your wine taste more fruity. There is a natural spiciness to the wine so do not dismiss spicier food. This would be heaven with crispy duck and plum sauce. Vegetarians need not miss out, puy lentils can hold their weight with Nero d'Avola.

“Jim Jim was Hugh's faithful Labrador/Kelpie, a highly intelligent sheepdog that had some of the native wild dog, the dingo in its genes.
Every vintage Jim Jim would eat Shiraz grapes only when they were ripe for the picking, so with viticultural skills like that Hugh decided he should get his own brand. Jim Jim went to the big kennel in the sky in November 2010 but his talent is remembered in his wines.
Now a little about the wine:
A great nose with distinct varietal spice, hints of earthy complexity and a blend of dark red fruits like blackberries, cherries and raspberries.
A fleshy rich mouth filling palate with hints of vanilla, bright red berries and liquorice. With a spicy finish, lively mid-palate and gentle tannins the focus of this wine is on generosity and approachability which makes it your best friend on the dining room table.
Cellar or Drink?
This wine will reward with ageing up to 2025 but if you want to experience the spirit of Australia in a bottle, its made in a drink now style.

Bondar Wines, Adelaide Hills, Chardonnay, 2016£20.95
Sourced from a single-vineyard at 400m above sea level in the cool Echunga area, this wine was hand-picked and pressed straight to barrel, where it underwent a natural fermentation. Matured in four barrels (one new, three older French oak) for about nine months. Very similar to the 2014 with a slightly purer fruit profile. We recommend you open it and let it breathe, sit back and watch it settle into its own skin and sing. It’s a wine that will age beautifully over the next few years.

How about the wine:
Hand-picked fruit from 65+ year old vines planted on Andre Bondar’s Rayner Vineyard in McLaren Vale. This wine pays homage to the Bondar style with fragrance and a lightness of touch. He used a proportion of whole bunches, which helps to create that lightness, and adds dimensions of flavour and a silky mouth feel. Aged in mostly older French oak, Violet Hour should improve nicely over the next five years or so and will suit lighter meat dishes and pasta beautifully.

Rusty Mutt, ‘Rocky Ox’ GSM, 2015£16.50
The GSM blend is an ‘Australian-ised’ version of the French Cotes du Rhone blend. This blend is all about youth, freshness, spice and complexity with very little oak influence.
The name ‘rocky ox’ comes from winemaker, Scott Heidrich’s daughter. He describes her as an “Earth Ox in the Chinese Astrological calendar, so I thought it was fitting as Grenache can show some fantastic earthiness as it develops.”
“The colour is youthful and vibrant and pretty much what you’d expect for a young wine! The aroma is so expressive showing tomato vine, smoked meats, raspberry, guava, blackberry and cloves with charcoal, olive and dense clay earth filling the glass. Once in the mouth you experience so much more. Concentrated ripe pomegranate, fleshy fruit, spice, firm acidity and a lengthy tannic grip. I love this wine, can’t you tell?!” Scott Heidrich, Winemaker.

O’Leary Walker “Claire” Reserve Shiraz, 2010£56.95
We discovered this powerful Clare Valley shiraz from a customer recommendation asking if we could import some for him. We obliged even though this was a rather punchy in price Shiraz. However, we are now thanking our customer for introducing us to this concentrated, complex bottle of blackberry spice and keep buying more and more. Totally deserving of the price and will last for years to come. Will cellar well until 2040.
Maxwell ‘Little Demon’ Grenache Rosé
In 1871 Scottish scientist James Clerk Maxwell (Mark Maxwell’s Great Grandfather) proposed a thought experiment, that involved a hypothetical creature acting as a gatekeeper between two compartments to sort gas molecules according to their speed. At first glance, such a system could potentially create energy from nothing… theoretically impossible given the laws of physics. This hypothetical gatekeeper became known to physicists as Maxwell’s Little Demon, and has stirred debate in the science community for more than a century.
Beautiful pink, salmon in colour while aromatic rose, Turkish delight and fresh strawberry gives a very attractive aroma.
The palate is light and fresh showing generous cherry, strawberry and aromatic spices. Well balanced, a drier style of rosé, highlighting the fresh fruit, crisp acidity. The grapes used in this wine are from Mark Maxwell’s 88 year Old Vine Grenache. Top, top grapes used on this wine giving complexity and interest and making it beautifully easy to drink.
Five Geese, Sue’s Paddock Reserve Grenache, 2012£34.95
This wine is named on the bottle from “Sue's Paddock” and this is because it is from her very much cherished 80 plus year Grenache gnarly vines. Sue Trott has only produced 200 cases of her limited Grenache Reserve.
By way of tasting notes there's ripe strawberry and raspberry flavours with the warmth of the dry grown Grenache showing long and fine tannins with a
lingering finish. There is a savoury dry character that is not aggressive
in any way with hints of spice.
Rusty Mutt ‘Catnip’ Viognier 2017£14.75
Only 150 dozen of this highly expressive Viognier has been produced and we feel very privileged to have some. This is the second wine in to be made in the Rusty Mutt family.
The palate has a lovely texture and mouthfeel without being oily as Viognier is prone to do. There is an abundance of fruit, spice, citrus and hints of green pepper held together will zesty acidity finishing on a clean dry citrus note.

O’Leary Walker, Polish Hill Riesling, 2014
If you’re a Riesling drinker you will love this release from the famed Polish Hill River sub-region of the Clare Valley.
It’s pure lime and slate and it’s both up-front and reserved at once. It’s intense through the finish yet it feels watery and refreshing and cool minerality through the centre. It’s beautiful drinking but will cellar, too.
